Manchester United have made their first signing of the Summer transfer season in David De Gea as SAF has confirmed tonight that De Gea will indeed play for United next season. The 20-year old Spanish goalkeeper has signed for United on a deal worth an estimated £18.3million and comes in as the long-term replacement for Edwin Van Der Sar. In my recent post on the possible contenders to replace VDS, I highlighted out De Gea as the top choice for United and it seems like I was right and I think it is a perfect signing. The experienced pairing of Ferdinand and Vidic should help De Gea grow exponentially in confidence and if VDS is anything to go by then if De Gea settles down at Old Trafford, we could be seeing him between the sticks for 20 years.
SAF announced that he intended to make 3 new signings this Summer and with De Gea already coming to Old Trafford, speculation will now turn to who else could be bought. Raphael Varane is another young name that has been strongly linked thus far but the rumour mill runs wild in the summer so we can only speculate as of now. Regardless, I am glad that United did not take long to bring in a keeper but the pressure lays firmly on the shoulders of De Gea as VDS has left a big pair of shoes to fill but I am confident that SAF has made the right choice as he has done so often in the past. I am looking forward to seeing him in the red of United next season and the excitement for the 20th Premier League season is already building.
