Manchester United have gone ahead and paid out just over £8 million for some land surrounding Old Trafford. Considering the state of debt that the club is in, it comes as a bit of a surprise really. What do we want to do with it? Officials associated with the club are being coy and say that there are no immediate plans to build on the land. The newly acquired land includes Trafford Park, directly opposite the South Stand and Three Wharfside, a 177,000sq ft industrial warehouse in the surrounding area. Could United be planning to extend the South Stand? It has always been touted as a possible move to increase the capacity of Old Trafford and a move to purchase this land suggests that it could happen in the future but with a main road standing in the way, it would not be a simple procedure. It might be the case that Manchester United are purchasing the land to make sure that nobody else can, therefore providing guarantees that the area will not be subject to building projects that might affect United but seeing as it is an industrial warehouse not in any particular close proximity to the stadium, your guess is as good as mine as to why they bought the land. We should be happy, regardless, that United are putting money back into the local area.
