It was announced today that Manchester United will play a fifth friendly in Sweden, as part of the DHL Tour 2012 pre-season warm-up matches. The Red Devils will play FC Barcelona at the Ullevi Stadium, Gothenburg on Wednesday 8th August 2012.
This will be the second time Manchester United have played in the city during Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign as the manager, but this was back in 1994. The first time Manchester United played in Gothenburg was during Sir Matt Busby’s reign as manager, in 1955 and 1956.
Manchester United chief executive, David Gill said “Manchester United against Barcelona is one of the top fixtures in world football and we are delighted to work with GotEvent to bring this match to the beautiful city of Gothenburg.”We have a large following throughout Scandinavia and it’s great that this match will form part of our preparations for the new season.”
The match will again be delivered by DHL, the Global Logistics Partner of Manchester United. John Pearson, the CEO of DHL Express Europe said “We are delighted to be involved in another tour with Manchester United. Using our global network we’ll be supporting the back room team to prepare for the Gothenburg leg of the tour and ensure that the team are ready to deliver success on the pitch.”
The match will be supported by Chevrolet, who recently became the Global Automotive Partner of Manchester United.
The Red Devils last played Barcelona during the tour of the United States of America on 30th July 2011, at the FedEx Field in Washington DC. Manchester United won the match 2-1 with goals from Luis Nani and former Red Devil, Michael Owen.
