On the 5th July, it was confirmed by Exeter City, that Manchester United had signed their 16-year-old midfielder, Sean Goss. The former Grecian player will join the Red Devils for an initial fee of £100,000. Goss has spent the last 8 years with Exeter City in their Centre of Excellence, where he played in the centre-midfield. He scored 13 goals last season for his side.

Goss was understood to have started his life as a Manchester United player early last week, before the confirmation of his transfer had been announced. He has previously been with the Old Trafford club on trial, and played in the Aegon Cup, which was played in Amsterdam at easter time. Manchester United got to the final, drawing 2-2 after 90 minutes. The match went to penalties, where the Red Devils lost 5-3, with Goss having his spot-kick saved by Xavier Mous, who played for Ajax, the tournament hosts and eventual winners.

“The last few days haven’t felt real – seeing all the first team players around and the training facilities is like a different world. As a Man United supporter as well as a (Exeter) City fan I couldn’t believe it, I’d dreamt about it all my life.”

“I can’t wait to get started now and we’ve got pre-season games coming up now. I just have to continue working hard and my aim now is to just push higher and higher through the ranks.”

“I’ve got family nearby and I’m sure it’ll help a lot knowing they are just around the corner. City’s will be the first result I look out for on a Saturday and I’ll be doing my best to get to northern away games if I haven’t got a fixture.” – Sean Goss

The former Exeter City Centre of Excellence player, originally from Crediton, Devon, has been a Manchester United supporter for most of his life and will remain an Exeter City fan also. It is good to see young players not wanting to forget their roots. Sean looks like a promising talent, and he is at the best club to bring that talent out of him. He could be a future Manchester United first team player, and if the club have signed him, it means that they believe in him and his talent.

Goss looks set to start his life in the Academy, where he is likely to spend the next two-years. If successful, he will then make his move in to the reserve team, where eventually he could make the leap into the first team. Of course this is a long way off and will only happen if the player continues to work hard at achieving his goals, and if the club feel he is doing enough to stay there.

We look forward to seeing the new Academy line-up next season, and to the many matches that will be covered on the clubs television channel, MUTV and live at Carrington training ground (for home matches), on a Saturday morning. We wish Sean all the best with his new club and hope to see him progress over the years with Manchester United.
