Barcelona claim no official Manchester United offer for Thiago

There have been no official offers for Thiago Alcantara according to Barcelona sources close to Sky Sports.

The 22-year-old returned from holiday in Celta today and movement is expected from the player regarding his immediate future.

But there has reportedly been no official approach to Barcelona from any club despite continued rumours linking him with a move away.

“We still have not received any formal offer for the player,” a source told Sky Sports when asked what the current situation with Thiago.

The claims support the official Barcelona spokesman Toni Freixa’s recent statement that there had been no advancements with the Thiago situation.

He said: “There’s no news. He has a contract and didn’t say anything, so he’s still a Barça player now.”

Spanish daily MARCA stand firm in their opinion that United are favourites to secure his signature because they can offer him the most playing time which is his reason for wanting to leave Barcelona and the club have reportedly given the 22-year-old an ultimatum because they want the time to find a replacement should he leave.

Many had hoped that David Moyes’ press conference today would see United unveil Thiago and while that was never likely given that he has not had a medical at the club yet, these claims pour further cold water on it.

It has never been the United way to openly discuss transfer negotiations and that hasn’t changed with Ferguson’s departure. An official offer may not have been made but that isn’t to say that the clubs are not negotiating a deal behind closed doors.

Right now, frustrations from both camps are down due mainly to Thiago’s lack of decisiveness in where he sees his immediate future but with time ticking away, movement will have to be swift.

The only thing that no official offer would like put an end to is the prospect of Thiago being unveiled at today’s press conference but given that his release clause does not rise back up to €90 million until 1 August, there is plenty of time for United to still secure his signature.
