Shinji Kagawa is yet to feature for Manchester United under David Moyes and it was believed that it was because of a lack of match fitness following an intense pre-season.
But Moyes has confirmed that the Japanese playmaker was fit today to play against Liverpool and that he chose to leave him out of the squad to give Nani a place on the bench.
When questioned about whether Kagawa’s absence was down to match fitness, Moyes said: “I just thought today you know, I thought today that I might have needed Nani at some time in the game.
“They are both sort of similar as far as fitness goes at levels so I just thought I might need him, as it was we did, to bring him on later on.”
Today against Liverpool, Kagawa was precisely the player we needed. In a game of tight margins and a disciplined Liverpool defence, Kagawa’s incisive passing and intelligent movement could of opened up spaces for us.
Nani did give United a more direct approach when he entered the field but there is a real worry that Moyes’ lack of faith in Kagawa could see him become disillusioned with life at United. However, it is early in the season and there will no doubt be plenty of opportunities for Kagawa to impress Moyes.
