Athletic Bilbao fans happy at Manchester United’s failure to land Ander Herrera

Athletic Bilbao fans are happy at Manchester United’s failure to land Ander Herrera because they never wanted the player to leave club in the first place.

Fans turned up and showed their support of Herrera at Bilbao’s training session today, as reported by El Correoand they were all unanimous in their support of the 24-year-old.

‘Best to stay’ one fan said to the camera, ‘the fans will be with you’ said another.

The 24-year-old may have only been at the club for two years but he has already made over 60 appearances in Basque country where he has established himself as an integral part of a successful Bilbao side.

Herrera may have offered to take a lower wage in order to help negotiations with United progress but he didn’t burn any bridges in Bilbao. He did not he publicly state that he wanted to leave the club and he didn’t try and force his transfer through at any stage. For that, he still has the full backing of the fans.

Fernando Llorente on the other hand showed what happened when you did burn bridges with Bilbao. He went public with his desire to leave and was forced to stay at the club for another year before he left for Juventus on a free transfer, showing just how difficult a club Bilbao are to negotiate with.

Today, Herrera will face the press and be questioned about his United move that never materialised which may give us an insight into how he is feeling after the disappointment of not moving to Old Trafford.

United will reportedly reignite their interest and attempt to sign Herrera again in January but the question would be whether the 24-year-old would want to move to Old Trafford after being left in the lurch on transfer deadline day.
