Manchester United hit with injury blow as midfielder ruled out

David Moyes has revealed that Tom Cleverley suffered an injury during training this week which ruled him out of tonight’s game against Liverpool.

The 24-year-old was fantastic in his cameo appearance against Manchester City and eyebrows were raised when United walked out with a central midfield duo of Phil Jones and Ryan Giggs, but Moyes was clearly forced to play a makeshift midfield as he wanted to rest Michael Carrick.

“We lost Cleverley with an injury in training and it left me a little bit short of midfield players,” he told ManUtd.com

Michael Carrick has played [a lot] and Marouane Fellaini was cup-tied so we were short of bodies.

“I wasn’t sure if I wanted to play Phil in midfield but I felt he played very well. He broke the game up for us at the right time and we tried to get him in the middle of the pitch as much as we could.”

Jones’ performance was great with his man marking role on Luis Suarez eliminating space for the Uruguayan a lot of the time but Ryan Giggs wasn’t up to scratch.

This weekend, Moyes will likely return to his central midfield first choice pairing of Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini against West Bromwich Albion.

Moyes gave no return date for Cleverley but it was great to see he sat and watched the game like a United fan.
