David Moyes makes a shrewd move with Wayne Rooney

If you had to choose the Manchester United player that has performed the best over the course of the season so far, Wayne Rooney would likely be one of the players top of your list.

The 27-year-old has returned to his barnstorming best so far this year after overcoming a series of injuries that limited his appearances during pre-season.

He has played a part in eight out of the last ten goals that United have scored and been named man of the match by the fans in every game he has started this season (5).

Rooney’s return to form is certainly down to his own work on fitness but David Moyes has played a major role in rekindling the spark that he had lost in the past couple of years.

Moyes has publicly praised Rooney at every opportunity and last night against Liverpool, he made a very shrewd move to name him as captain on the night.

On paper, Rooney certainly doesn’t deserve to be given the armband given how he has treated the club but Moyes wants him to stay and will do everything in his power to make that happen.

Letting Rooney walk the team out against Liverpool will have had a real psychological effect on him. You saw it in his performance – he was running everywhere, throwing himself into tackles and generally getting involved as much as possible. His heart was back on his sleeve.

That Rooney is the one that United fans love. The boy that left everything on the pitch at the final whistle and the signs are there that he has returned this season.

Anybody in a job can love the people they work with, love what they do but not enjoy the company they work for. That was clearly the case for Rooney. He loved being a United player but didn’t love United.

Of course, Rooney may be doing this to put himself in the shop window for next year but the optimist in every United fan is that he his affection for the club is returning. Moyes has done fantastically well in getting Rooney back to his best and if he can maintain these sort of performances for the whole year, he could have his best ever season in a United shirt.
