Manchester United could sign Brazilian midfielder ahead of City as agent confirms other clubs interested

FC Porto midfielder Fernando was on the verge of a move to Manchester City in January but negotiations between the clubs broke down and his agent has revealed that although City were the strongest candidate, there were other clubs in the race to sign him.

Antonio Araujo told A Bola there was another offer on the table as well which was rejected by Porto but United had repeatedly sent scouts to watch Porto in action, so there is every chance we may still be in the race to sign him.

“Fernando will play in the Premier League next season,” Araujo explained.

“Manchester City are the strongest candidates to sign Fernando, but they’re not alone in the race for him.

“Fernando had a great offer from Monaco in the summer, but Porto rejected their offer.”

United losing out on Lucas Moura is a fine example of when a transfer is so close to completion but then crumbles away and Fernando’s move to City is far from secure.

Reports from Portugal have suggested Fernando may well have signed a new contract with Porto so that the club can avoid him leaving on a free transfer in the summer and he is highly regarded as a fantastic box-to-box midfielder – precisely the player that should be on top of United’s wish list this summer.

Of course, should he prefer a move to City then United would struggle to match their wage offer but at Old Trafford, he’d be a regular starter instead of a squad player at City, so the attraction of more football could be a lure.

Do you think Fernando is already a done deal for Manchester City or can United swoop and sign him?
