Juan Mata will not be able to play in the UEFA Champions League for Manchester United this season because he is cup tied from his time at Chelsea and David Moyes has admitted he is frustrated that he won’t be able to use him.

The 25-year-old is slowly but surely warming to the United shirt and his performance against Crystal Palace had glimpses of him at his best but we won’t get to see what he can do in Europe until next season, which is a real shame given how suited to European football his style of play would be.

“We wanted to get Mata when we could and that was the Jaanuary transfer window,” Moyes told the Daily Star.

“Yes, it’s a frustration we can’t use him in the Champions League and that’s why you hear people saying January isn’t a great time to buy. Most of the clubs are trying to buy players who aren’t Champions League cup-tied.

“But the better ones tend to be – like Juan. We are trying to buy that type of talent, so as I say, we wanted to get him early when we could.”

United travel to Olympiacos on Tuesday and it will be a test for the side given how poor we have been since we topped our group back at the start of December.

Thanks to the win against Palace yesterday, we should go into the fixture with a renewed sense of confidence and although few expect United to win the trophy, stranger things have happened in football so the belief will be there that we can do well in the tournament.
