Rooney: Let me be Manchester United captain

Wayne Rooney has said he wants to become Manchester United’s new captain, according to The Sun.

Nemanja Vidic’s departure in the summer leaves the armband free at Manchester United and after he signed a new £300,000 a week deal, Rooney has been widely tipped to become United’s new captain under David Moyes.

Rooney has been given the armband before for one-off occasions such as back in 2011this year in the Capital One Cup under Moyes and Sir Alex Ferguson tipped Rooney to become a future United captain – but it remains to be seen whether fans would be happy if he was given the armband on a permanent basis because of what he did back in 2010 with his contract.

For me, Jonny Evans should be named our new captain but there is an air of inevitability with regards to Rooney getting given the responsibility. Moyes has made it clear since day one how important Rooney is to him and making him captain would be the next step.

Of course, Moyes has insisted that nothing will happen until the end of the season so for the next couple of months, there will be plenty of talk among fans as to who should be named captain. Is Rooney the fans’ choice?

Who do you think should become Manchester United’s new captain?
