Manchester City are now interested in signing Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho according to the usually reliable Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.
The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder has long been a target for United and David Moyes has sent representatives to watch him in action approximately 14 times this season and recent reports suggested United had already opened talks with Sporting.
City have shown little or no interest in Carvalho up until this point, just like they did with FC Porto duo Fernando and Eliaquim Mangala up until the point they tried to sign both in January, and they may well try to gazump United with Carvalho as well.
Carvalho has been nothing short of superb this season for Sporting and Portuguese football expert Jan Hagen went as far as to say that soon he’d be the best defensive midfielder in the world for the next ten years.
Take his man of the match performance against Porto this weekend for example, it had it all – power, strength, tackling, passing, forward drive and a natural intelligence. He certainly looks like he has all the hallmarks of a world class player.
Carvalho is expected to play an important role in the World Cup for Portugal and now that Manchester City are sniffing at his heels, United would be wise to move fast in order to secure him. Otherwise, we could end up getting dragged into a bidding war.
