Manchester United’s 3-0 win against Olympiacos may have been spearheaded by Robin van Persie’s hat-trick but it was the collective performance of the whole team that was really impressive.
It was reflected in the WhoScored Champions League Team of the Week as Manchester United had five players in the line-up.
Deservedly, David de Gea was named in goal. Van Persie’s three goals would have counted for nothing if De Gea hadn’t have kept a clean sheet and his double save to keep the score at 1-0 was a turning point.
Rafael and Phil Jones earned their place in defence and Jones in particular had a composed performance against Olympiacos. Now that he has had a run of games in his preferred centre back position, Jones is really starting to show that he has the capability to become United’s long term replacement for Vidic or Ferdinand.
Wayne Rooney was named up front alongside Robin van Persie which is no big surprise – both were fantastic against Olympiacos.
Five players were in the team of the week but the likes of Ryan Giggs and Antonio Valencia could also have been named in the team because on a night where United were under severe pressure to perform, we put in one of our most complete performances of the season.
