Player Ratings: Manchester United 3-0 Olympiacos – De Gea and Giggs domination

David de Gea 8 – Tonight required big performances and De Gea certainly produced one. Pulled off a wonderful double save towards the end of the first half and made a couple of other good stops throughout. The game could have been completely different without him.

Rafael 6 – Was perhaps a little over-eager but pressed with intent and set United on the front foot with his aggressive defending. Attacked well and maintained his good understanding with Valencia.

Phil Jones 7 – A real warrior at the heart of the defence. Produced a number of good headed clearances as the pressure mounted late on. Looked measured, aside from one instance where Campbell left him for dead.

Rio Ferdinand 7 – Solid if unspectacular alongside Jones with Vidic, Smalling and Evans all missing. Class on the ball came through on a rare outing.

Patrice Evra 6 – Struggled at times and often failed to prevent crosses coming from his side of the pitch. Attacked with some vigour and came close with a glancing header. Booking rules him out of quarter-final first leg.

Antonio Valencia 7 – Sustained a nasty eye injury early on but that failed to curtail the Ecuadorian who carried on regardless. What a warrior. United needed fighters and Valencia’s performance typified that.

Michael Carrick 6 – Composed but understated once more and seemed to benefit from Giggs’ inclusion, with his partner happy to take the ball in a variety of situations.

Ryan Giggs 8 – The 40-year-old was an absolute revelation in the centre with his brilliant, inventive use of the ball from deep. Contributed to United’s first two goals. Despite his age, he still managed to get about the pitch too. Irreplaceable.

Danny Welbeck 8 – Added energy and pace, two things distinctly lacking at the weekend, and battled well down the left flank. His power allowed him to get in behind on a couple of occasions and his quality on the ball was generally good.

Wayne Rooney 8 – Dropped a little deeper tonight and United benefited, and managed to support attacks well. Crashed a header off the post early doors and was generally impressive, assisted Van Persie’s second.

Robin van Persie 8 – Has been out of sorts of late but the set-up was right tonight and Van Persie reaped the rewards. Involved throughout and had ice running through his veins with three cultured finishes. Knock to the knee could keep him out against West Ham.

Substitutes

Ashley Young n/a – Replaced Valencia and did the bread and butter stuff relatively well, although he failed to have an impact further forward with United camped deep in their own half.

Darren Fletcher n/a – Shored up the midfield a bit but didn’t have too much to do. Good composure to tee up Rooney late on.

Marouane Fellaini n/a – Replaced Van Persie very late on and his ability to keep the ball in the corner might be his real forte.
