West Ham 0-2 Manchester United: Star performer

Star Performer

Wayne Rooney should take the plaudits.  His first goal showed just what players of his quality are capable of with a sublime piece of skill out of nowhere.

It wasn’t just that goal though, or the fact he scored the second – it was his general all round play.  He was composed on the ball, sprayed passes all over the field and had the confidence to attempt shots that not many would.  However, it wouldn’t be fair to mention Rooney without mentioning Shinji Kagawa and Juan Mata.

Kagawa and Mata prove that keeping the ball on the floor is where United’s strengths lie, not wasting possession with aimless crosses.  Those three clearly enjoyed playing together.  Some of the interchanges between them were beautiful to watch.  Basic rules of football were in full flow and West Ham just couldn’t cope.

The United players will have been disappointed they didn’t bag a few more.

Under Performer

Ashley Young.  He delivered so many poor passes and failed crosses as.  If the opposition team had 11 players sent off, Ashley Young would still be able to hit one of them.  What does Moyes see in Young?  People say he is more disciplined defensively than the likes of Mata or Kagawa but that’s because he has to be.  He concedes possession so much he has to chase back and make up for it.  He also doesn’t actually prevent crosses any more than either of them so I just don’t buy the argument that he ever deserves a place over Kagawa.
