Thiago Alcantara has been ruled out of both Champions League quarter-final matches against Manchester United after suffering ligament damage in Bayern Munich’s match against Hoffenheim today.
The 22-year-old had been an important player for Bayern Munich in the Champions League since returning from injury earlier this season but he will now not feature against United which is good news.
Bad news for @Thi_Alcantara91: The partial ligament tear in his knee means he will be out for 6 to 8 weeks

However, his absence doesn’t change much for Bayern because their squad depth is so strong. Given that Thiago’s replacement would be chosen from the likes of Toni Kroos, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Javi Martinez or Philip Lahm, then it doesn’t really give an advantage to United.
Kroos, one of United’s reported midfield targets this summer, sent his own well wishes to Thiago after the injury was confirmed by Bayern Munich.
Gute Besserung @Thi_Alcantara91 ! Sehr sehr bitter für uns!

One saving grace is that United fans won’t have to watch Thiago play against us and wonder ‘what if’ he had moved to Old Trafford.
