Sporting Lisbon have failed in their attempt to sign Academia midfielder Fernando Alexandre in what is the first sign that they are preparing for life after William Carvalho.
O Jogo reports that Sporting offered Alexandre, who is out of contract in the summer, an annual contract of €150,000 but that it wasn’t enough to convince him to sign a deal.
Alexandre isn’t the only midfielder who Sporting have made advances towards as Estoril’s Goncalo Santos is somebody they have been looking at, so there is plenty to suggest Sporting are preparing for Carvalho’s departure.
Although Sporting president Bruno de Carvalho has insisted that Carvalho does not want to leave, their active pursuits of new midfielders will only add to the speculation he will move in the summer.
David Moyes’ rigorous scouting of Carvalho certainly indicates Manchester United are interested in him but with so many other clubs linked with making a move for him, United will more than likely face some stiff competition for his signature.
