Star performer vs Bayern Munich – Vidic and Carrick excelled but Fellaini flopped

If Manchester United fans were offered 1-1 before kick-off last night, we’d have taken it.

The prerogative, given who we were playing and the fact we were in terrible form, was to make sure we went to the Allianz Arena still in the tie – we did exactly that. We can now go to the Allianz Arena with it all to play for.

Nemanja Vidic might have been the goalscorer but who fared best against Bayern?

Star Performer

Nemanja Vidic showed David Moyes last night that age is just a number.

He dominated at the back, won everything in the air and looked every bit the defender all United fans know and love.

Although we got exposed a few times, we limited Bayern to very few chances from crosses (except the goal) and Vidic played a huge roll in that.

Then, Vidic rolled back the years to a time when he carried such a threat that defenders feared him on every corner. Given the space he was afforded in the box, there was only going to be one outcome and his delicate finish sent Old Trafford wild.

The ball was played just behind him but he rose well and with the touch of a centre forward nodded home with a bit of finesse. We conceded a goal the players will be disappointed with but Vidic should not shoulder any of the blame for that.

Michael Carrick. Given that Bayern tend to dominate the ball and in particular the midfield, Carrick had a tough job on his hands. He sat deep and provided cover for the defence. Whilst he never bullies opposition players like a Roy Keane type might do, he knows how to position himself, shield the danger and usher them into less threatening areas.

On the attacking front, we really had only Danny Welbeck to hit since everyone else was sat so deep. However, Carrick saw passes that not many others would have. His work is always subtle but he’s a different class to anything else we have in the middle.

Danny Welbeck should get a mention for his work-rate alone. It could’ve been a very different night but for a disallowed goal and a chance he should’ve done better with but he carried a threat which at times Bayern couldn’t deal with.

Under Performer

Marouane Fellaini struggled once again up against top level opposition.

I’m not sure if it was his fault or Moyes’ but he didn’t appear to know what his role was and looked lost at times. He seemed to be caught between an attacking and a defensive role and in the end managed neither particularly well.

It was a night where he could’ve made a name for himself. He had two other people supporting him and had he been regularly involved in breaking up Bayern’s possession, I think United fans would’ve applauded him but he didn’t.

He also failed to track Schweinsteiger for Bayern’s equaliser which could prove very costly.
