Ilkay Gundogan has been ruled out for the rest of the season for Borussia Dortmund and will not go to the World Cup with Germany this summer.
The 23-year-old has spent the entire season on the sidelines with back problems and there are no signs that he is any closer to overcoming his injuries.
It is a bitter blow for Gundogan as he was one of the most coveted midfielders in Europe last season but his chronic back issues don’t look like they are going to go away any time soon.
Manchester United have been linked with a move for Gundogan all year because his current deal expires next summer and he is yet to agree a new contract with Borussia Dortmund.
However, this latest setback shows that it would be a massive risk for United if we went in for Gundogan as there is every possibility his career could mirror that of Owen Hargreaves’ in that injuries may force him to miss more football than he plays.
Sad to hear Gundogan has now been ruled out of the World Cup.

The last thing Manchester United need to do is sign a midfielder who could solve a lot of our issues on paper but in reality could spend more time on the medical table than on the pitch.
With his future uncertain at Borussia Dortmund, his World Cup ruled out and no sign of his back recovering, Gundogan’s season couldn’t really have gone any worse.
