Five Bundesliga stars who Van Gaal can sign for Manchester United

With Louis Van Gaal reportedly due to be confirmed as Manchester United manager next week, I take a look at some possible transfer targets from the league where Louis van Gaal used to manage – the Bundesliga.

Here are five candidates who Van Gaal may look to bring to Manchester United this summer.

Toni Kroos

Manchester United were first linked to Kross late last year as it emerged that David Moyes was a keen admirer and that United were following the midfielders’ contract situation closely. It has gone as far as United reportedly being ready to offer £250,000 a week to tempt him to leave the German champions.

Kroos is only 24 but is already regarded as one of the best central midfielders around with his superb passing range being his main strength. It seemed unlikely that Kroos would join United whilst Moyes was in charge but with Van Gaal at the helm, it strengthens United’s chances considerably.

Van Gaal was the manager at Bayern who gave Kroos his chance in the first team and Kroos is said to hold Van Gaal in very high regard. Bayern have stated that Kroos will remain their player next season but with his apparent reluctance to sign a new deal, a big money offer from United this summer could well tempt them into selling instead of risking losing him for free next summer.

Marco Reus

The young German is one of the hottest properties in the world right now and would be a fantastic signing for any club. Van Gaal is well known for preferring the 4-3-3 formation and Reus would be perfect to play on the left side of the front three. It would be very hard to convince Dortmund to part with their star man though as they are already losing top scorer Robert Lewandowski in the summer so they won’t want to lose their next best attacking threat but if United and Van Gaal really way him, then a bid of £40m+ might make Dortmund think twice.

Mats Hummels

With Nemanja Vidic leaving for Inter and the future of Rio Ferdinand still uncertain, it’s quite likely that Manchester United will look to sign an experienced centre-back this summer. The likes of Garay, Mangala and Lovren have all been linked but with Van Gaal being familiar with the Bundesliga, he might well try as lure Hummels from Dortmund.

The 25-year-old German international is regarded as one of the best centre backs in Europe and with his composure and ability on the ball, he would be the perfect long term replacement for Ferdinand. But, as with Reus, Dortmund would be very reluctant to sell and it’s almost impossible that they would sell both but it wouldn’t surprise me if Van Gaal tried to sign one of them.

Ricardo Rodriguez

The latest reports are that United  are very close to signing young Southampton left-back Luke Shaw but if for some reason that deal doesn’t go ahead, then United could do a lot worse than moving for Wolfsburg’s Swiss left-back Ricardo Rodriguez. The 21-year-old is having a superb season in Germany and looks a real talent. Strong, quick and good going forward, the youngster is not only a good defender but also an important attacking threat.

Hakan Calhanoglu

Not a household name outside Germany yet but trust me. he will be soon enough.

His club Hamburg are having a terrible season and are on the verge of being relegated for the first time in their history but Calhanoglu has been a shining light. The young attacking midfielder has scored ten league goals which is very impressive considering his teams’ struggles. It’s very unlikely that he will remain at Hamburg next season even if they do manage to stay up but if they do go down then, he could be available for as little as £10m and at that price, he’d be an absolute bargain for any team.
