When Juan Mata signed for Manchester United in January, it was seen as curtains for the career of Shinji Kagawa.
Before Mata joined, Kagawa already struggled to get game time and thanks to the arrival of Mata, that would become even harder, surely?
Instead of Mata’s presence working against Kagawa, the Spaniard has brought the best out of the Japanese playmaker and vice versa.
But what did Manchester United fans want to see? We posed the question to them and the response was overwhelming and emphatic.
That’s as landslide a vote as you’re ever going to see and is wholly justified.
With Kagawa and Mata both on the pitch, Manchester United have played some of their finest football this season with the display away to Newcastle probably the best example of that.
Last week against Norwich, Ryan Giggs chose to bench Mata but appearance from the bench coincided with Kagawa’s departure soon after. As it happened, Manchester United won 4-0 inspired by Mata.
Today against Sunderland, Giggs should start Kagawa and Mata because he has seen first hand how devastating they can be together and with nothing but pride to play for this season, Giggs has nothing to lose by starting both.
