William Carvalho has admitted he is unsure if he will stay at Sporting Lisbon this summer for the first time.
Carvalho, 22, has always been adamant in his stance when questioned about his future and only last month, he said: “My future is set. I’ll return to Sporting Lisbon after the World Cup. I’m a Sporting player until 2018. Everything else is just speculation.”
Now, speaking after Portugal were knocked out of the World Cup despite beating Ghana 2-1, Carvalho was anything but adamant that his future was already set in stone.
“If I’ll stay at Sporting? I don’t know. We’ll see when I get home,” he said.
Our well documented and public pursuit of Carvalho lasted all of last season but the trail for him has gone cold since Louis van Gaal‘s appointment.
Despite that, he is still considered one of the best defensive midfield options available right now and at 22, he is only going to get better.
Carvalho started for the first time at this World Cup last night after impressing as a substitute in the last game and here is what a few United fans thought of his performance.
William Carvalho truly showed his class today

William Carvalho, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Arturo Vidal would top list as the third CM but all three are unlikely tbf.

The more I watch William Carvalho the more I'm amazed by how big he is. An absolute unit.

Carvalho’s distinct change of tone is certainly indicative of a player who has far from sorted his future out and United most certainly need a defensive midfielder of his ilk this summer. Now that the door is clearly open, a move has the potential to happen.
