Player Ratings: LA Galaxy 0-7 Manchester United – Hat-trick hero Herrera

David de Gea 6 – A virtual bystander in goal for Manchester United aside from one decent save midway through the first half.

Antonio Valencia 6 – Got free a few times down the right but the quality of his final ball varied.

Chris Smalling 6 – More comfortable on the ball than he typically is and was rarely exposed defensively alongside Jones and Smalling.

Phil Jones 6 – Anchored the defence well in an assured 45 minute appearance.

Jonny Evans 7 – Stepped out of defence pretty adeptly and was excellent in possession.

Luke Shaw 6 – Quiet debut for the 19-year-old. Struggled to influence things going forward.

Darren Fletcher 7 – Assured whether in midfield or at centre back. Kept things ticking over in the middle nicely.

Ander Herrera 9 – Excellent bow for the Spaniard. Ball retention was brilliant and his second half display was sublime. A hat-trick of assists was the least he deserved.

Juan Mata 8 – Was able to drift in between the lines and found nice pockets of space. Linked well with Rooney and Welbeck.

Danny Welbeck 7 – Got United off to a flyer with a low drive on 14 minutes. Pace caused LA Galaxy trouble.

Wayne Rooney 7 – A well-taken penalty and a tap-in capped an efficient 45 minutes for the forward. Seemed relatively sharp.

Substitutes

Anders Lindegaard 6 – Like De Gea in the first half, had relatively little to do.

Rafael 6– Replaced Valencia and also occasionally lacked precision in the final third.

Michael Keane 6 – Rarely tested and seems to be maturing nicely.

Tyler Blackett 6 – Operated in the left centre back berth. Like Keane, showed decent composure.

Reece James 8 – Two excellent finishes rounded off a fabulous first appearance for the club. Dream stuff.

Tom Cleverley 6 – Safe in possession but kept things ticking over in the centre. Big few months ahead.

Shinji Kagawa 6 – Had a few nice touches here and there and was neat in possession but overshadowed by rampageous Hererra.

Nani 5 – Perhaps a little wasteful when in possession and often lacked a consistent end product in an advanced role.

Ashley Young 8 – Two very tidy finishes from the much-maligned winger. Fabulous cross for James’ first too.
