Manchester United’s Dutch target Stefan de Vrij joins Lazio

Following a long summer of transfer speculation, Dutch defender Stefan De Vrij has joined Italian side Lazio for a fee of €8.5m.

The former Feyenoord player was named as the best defender at the World Cup in accordance to official FIFA statistics and having been an ever present in Louis Van Gaal’s Holland side, many expected he could follow his national boss to Old Trafford.

Lazio owner Claudio Lotito has remained confident throughout this saga that he would land his man despite the reported interest from Manchester United.

Lazio officially announced the player would be undergoing a medical on their official Twitter account and have since confirmed his signing.

De Vrij was one of a number of the Holland squad linked with summer moves to Old Trafford along with the likes of Bruno Martins Indi who has joined FC Porto and Daryl Janmaat who has joined Newcastle, while is is believed United are in a fight with Barcelona over the signature of Daley Blind, another member of Van Gaal’s World Cup squad.
