Barcelona agree £15m fee for Manchester United target Thomas Vermaelen

Barcelona have agreed a £15m fee with Arsenal for Thomas Vermaelen according to various reports and will now look to agree personal terms with the Belgian ahead of a move to Spain.

Arsene Wenger revealed Arsenal had received a bid from Manchester United for Vermaelen, 28, but reports suggest United were not willing to match Barcelona’s terms so have pulled out of any potential deal.

There are also suggestions that Arsenal wanting to have Chris Smalling or Phil Jones included in a deal contributed to United ending their interest.

Vermaelen moving abroad instead of to a domestic rival would more than likely be Arsenal’s preference and United standing firm on their offer rather than increasing would show that Vermaelen isn’t a target who United considered an absolute priority.

United will still be in the market for a centre-back if Vermaelen completes his move to Barcelona and Gianluca di Marzio suggests that AS Roma’s Mehdi Benatia is somebody who has emerged as a target.
