Tom Lawrence grabbed Manchester United’s first goal of the evening in the 3-0 win over Norwich City in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League.
It was a simple finish only because Lawrence was in the right place at the right time.
After the match, Lawrence spoke to MUTV’s spoke to Mark Sullivan about the winning start to the Under-21s league campaign and his personal aspirations for the season.
He said: “It was a great experience and hopefully I can get some more. Just do as well as I can and push for the first team spot when I can.”
Lawrence also praised the performance of United on the night: “It was a comfortable win and the lads, we knocked the ball about very well, and yeah it was a good win overall. We got a few people on the scoresheet which is always a bonus…A win against City and win again tonight, it’s a good start.”
Lawrence is more usually deployed as a secondary striker or on the wing but was pleased to be able to help out his team-mates by taking on the centre forward role tonight, something which gave him the chance to show his versatility.
“He’s [Warren Joyce] asked me to go up front as a two, whatever the manager asks you do it and the goal is a bonus,” he added.
“The whole teams versatile, we can play midfeld, striker and even play defense if need be. It’s good, we’ve got a good all round team here.”
Lawrence feels that the adoption of the first team’s 5-3-2 tactics will be beneficial to the progression of youth through the ranks but he hopes that this season he can get some more first team appearances under his belt, having made his debut in United’s 3 – 1 victory over Hull last season.
