Danny Welbeck is set to leave Manchester United and join Arsenal in a £16m move, according to the BBC.
The 23-year-old had been given permission by United to leave the club as he was unhappy with his position in the squad as a backup striker.
Now, it looks like Welbeck will join United’s domestic rivals Arsenal in a move that has come as a big surprise to both United and Arsenal fans.
The writing was on the wall for Welbeck after news broke that Radamel Falcao would joining United on loan but few expected Welbeck would leave on a permanent deal, let alone to a direct rival.
This season, United’s main challenge is to make sure a top four spot and Champions League football is secured. For that reason, Arsenal are a direct rival which makes it all the more surprising Louis van Gaal was happy to sell them the exact sort of player they desperately needed.
Also, £16m for a young English striker with bags of potential who United had trained since he was a little boy is very under-priced when you consider Shane Long was bought for £12m in this window.
