Next up in our potential formations for Manchester United this season is a 4-1-2-1 in which Wayne Rooney operates from a central midfield role.
Rooney has previously played in central midfield at various points and all to varying degrees of success but with Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao in the side, Louis van Gaal may choose to use Rooney’s versatility.
However, there is a risk this formation could leave the defence exposed if Rooney and Di Maria are unable to offer any protection by tracking back.
Juan Mata has been given the all important No.10 role ahead of Rooney in his formation and it is a position he has thrived in at United but the big question is whether Rooney would be able to perform in central midfield.
