The 24-year-old was used as a left wing-back by Van Gaal at the World Cup with Holland this summer but admits he likes how Blind plays in defensive midfield and feels he can really strengthen United in that area.
“He is a player who can see situations in advance,” Van Gaal told MUTV when asked about Blind’s strongest assets as a player.
“He can [therefore] always pass to the free player, and when he doesn’t have the ball, he knows when he has to press the opponent. That’s a very good ability to have.
“I like him as a defensive midfielder, but he can also play in central defence or at left full-back.
“He can run for 90 minutes too and is always fit. That’s another very good quality for a player.”
With only Darren Fletcher fit, United have been very weak and open in central midfield because they haven’t had a player who can marshal that area.
Now, Blind can fill that role and act as the pivot player who not only breaks up the opposition going fdorward but will play a vital role in United getting attacks started.
Blind’s versatility will serve him well at United and fans can expect to see him play at both centre-back and left wing-back when necessary but a defensive midfield role is likely to be his primary position for United.
