Joe Rothwell replaces injured Josh Harrop for England U20s

Manchester United’s young midfielder Josh Harrop has been forced to withdraw from international duty with England’s Under-20s due to injury and has been replaced by his team-mate Joe Rothwell, the club has confirmed.

Rothwell will join team-mate Ben Pearson in the Netherlands for an Under-20s tournament with England where they will face off against the likes of Germany in what should be some good competitive action for the youngsters.

It’s a real blow for Harrop after what has been a fine season of progress with United’s Under-18s/21s but doesn’t come as too much of a surprise given that he was substituted from United’s most recent game against Tottenham Hotspur with an injury.

The silver lining in this situation is that it is his team-mate Rothwell who replaces him in the side. Last season for the Under-21s, Rothwell and Pearson was a fantastic central midfield partnership and his absence from the Barclays Under-21 Premier League final against Chelsea hindered United’s performance on the day.

There’s no guarantee either of them will start for the Under-20s but the experience of joining England for an international competition should benefit them regardless.
