Luke Shaw learning how to be an elite player from Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao

England’s U21s boss Gareth Southgate believes Luke Shaw is quickly learning how to become a world class player from the likes of Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao.

The 19-year-old made the huge jump up from Southampton to Manchester United this season which is no mean feat and has impressed since regaining his full match fitness after injury.

In the international break Shaw helped England’s U21s qualify for the Euro 2015 Championships finals and Southgate feels the knowledge he is getting at United from those around him at United is helping to lift his performances.

He said: “I think what he now has is a recognition of what “world class” looks like.

“He might have had an idea of what he thought it was before, bBut training at Manchester United with the likes of Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria has given him a full understanding of the concept now.

“He would have known there was a level, but now he knows there is a level above that.

“He was able to share those stories among our lads in the U21s because all players at times in their careers think they are nearly there – and then you discover you still have a bit of a way to go.

“You continually have to strive to be better than you are and Luke realises that now.”

At United, Shaw has the possible platform to maximise his potential. Countless teenagers before him have come through United to go on and have massively successful careers and Louis van Gaal investing the best part of £30m in Shaw this summer is indicative that he believes Shaw can follow that same path.
