Scholes: Mata should be dropped for Rooney against Manchester City

Paul Scholes feels Juan Mata should be dropped and Wayne Rooney should take his place in Manchester United’s side to face City this weekend in the derby.

In Rooney’s absence through suspension, Mata came into United’s first-team but his performances underwhelmed which left fans a little disappointed given that he should have made more of his opportunities.

With Rooney likely to be back and available for selection, Mata could be pushed back to the bench and Scholes feels that’s the right thing to do.

“As for United, my key change would be Wayne Rooney back in for Juan Mata,” Scholes said in his column for The Independent.

“I cannot see Louis van Gaal doing any different. The Chelsea game just seemed to pass Mata by on Sunday and that is what will count against him. He seemed to be overpowered. Rooney has a great record against City and he just has to play.

Scholes is right. If Rooney is fit to return then Mata is the most likely candidate to make way for him because he simply didn’t do enough with his performances in Rooney’s absence to warrant a starting spot against City.

It’s a real shame Mata was unable to influence the game as much as United fans had hoped because he’s a fantastic player but with so many attacking options, Louis van Gaal will have little time for sentiment this year, let alone for his first derby as United manager.
