Tom Cleverley will complete a £7.5m move to Aston Villa when the January transfer window opens, according to reports.
The 25-year-old midfielder has spent the season on loan at Villa so far and having enjoyed an upturn in his form since getting regular game time under Paul Lambert, the Villa boss is reportedly now happy to sign him on a permanent basis.
Having been released by Louis van Gaal, Cleverley’s future doesn’t remain at Manchester United. Daley Blind was brought in this summer and more central midfield signings are expect over the next few transfer windows, so there would be no place for Cleverley in the squad in much the same fashion as Anderson has found himself frozen out under the Dutchman.
Cleverley is a player who offered genuine promise in purple patches but was never able to translate that into consistent and regular form at United. One game he would be in fantastic form but it could be swiftly followed by one in which he disappeared.
Whether or not Cleverley does indeed complete his move to Villa in January, the English midfielder is unlikely to be part of United’s future under Van Gaal.
