Andreas Weimann has urged his Aston Villa team mate and captain Ron Vlaar to ignore interest from Manchester United.
Vlaar has been heavily linked with a move to the club ever since his former manager Louis van Gaal joined the club in the summer.
The two worked together closely whilst van Gaal was manager of Holland and Vlaar was a key man as the nation marched to the semi-finals of the World Cup earlier this year.
But Weimann has urged the club captain to turn down any potential move to Old Trafford that may come his way.
He said: “Ron is our captain so everyone knows he’s important so hopefully he’ll stay. He’s in the middle of our team and we hope he’ll stay.
“He knows we all want him to stay and I’m sure the gaffer and everyone else will try and get him to stay.”
The 29-year-old’s contract expires in the summer and if United don’t make a bid during the January transfer window, they’ll be able to discuss freely the possibility of the defender joining on a free transfer next summer.
With United keeping their options open defensively, this one could run and run whatever happens this month.
