Manchester United lost out on Raphael Varane to Real Madrid in the same summer Phil Jones joined the club but reports are continuing to gather pace that the French defender could be available.
United fanzine Red Issue suggest Real may be willing to accept just £15m for the French defender, despite him being one of the most promising young defenders in world football.
While the figure seems very low, Red Issue are unlikely to pull a figure out of thin air in their last ever edition given that they’ve had great sources for decades.
While £15m for Varane would be an absolute steal, the real question is whether a 21-year-old defender with real promise is the defensive solution which United are in need of.
Louis van Gaal is more likely to be looking for someone very experienced to lead the defence than a youngster who has the potential to grow into that, players such as Diego Godin, Mats Hummels and Ezequiel Garay.
Of course, Van Gaal has always reiterated that an age is nothing more than a number when it comes to choosing players and given that Varane has already made over 100 senior appearances for club and country, he has plenty of experience under his belt for a player who is only 21.
