Manchester United continue to be linked with a big money move for Borussia Dortmund centre-back and World Cup winner Mats Hummels.
Even during months where the transfer window was shut, Hummels continued to be linked with a move despite constant denials from both player and club that a move wouldn’t happen.
United may still be interested in making the World Cup winning defender their top defensive target but BBC’s Ben Smith suggests it would continue to be difficult for United to pull it off.
“Another potential target for Man United is Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels,” he said.
“He’s one that Louis van Gaal likes a lot and he’s a player that could bring a great deal of stability to Man United’s central defence but again it’s going to be a real battle to get him away from Dortmund.”
Dortmund’s poor form and subsequent slide down the table will give supporters hope it may prompt Hummels to force a move away from Germany but his father and agent denied such stories earlier this month.
Hummels himself expressed his frustration at Dortmund’s form and doesn’t appear as happy as he did when returning from Brazil as a world champion in the summer, so the rumours will continue to bubble on.
