Stories linking AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman with a move to Manchester United continue to appear, even if the Serie A side won’t let the midfielder go easily.
Strootman’s knee injury in March forced Van Gaal to change his whole system at the 2014 World Cup and Strootman’s signature may be the key to United finally ridding themselves of the 3-5-2 system which continues to frustrate supporters.
BBC Sport journalist Ben Smith spoke about Strootman’s potential move to Old Trafford in their regular gossip round-up on the website.
“Last season they broke their transfer record to bring in Juan Mata,” he said.
“This time, it could be that Kevin Strootman arrives. Roma tell us there’s absolutely no way they will sell their best player but money talks in these kind of situations and we’ve seen it before.”
Roma’s constant denials have frustrated United supporters given the lack of a player like the midfielder in United’s current squad and it is sure to frustrate van Gaal given it appears he has continued to make Strootman one of his top targets.
But fans will have been pleased to hear Strootman say several times since the summer that he would like to play under his former manager once again whilst some believe a deal is already in place for the midfielder to move to Old Trafford sooner rather than later.
