Evans was a second half casualty against QPR with a slight knock and it appears it will be enough to keep the Northern Ireland captain out of Friday’s game.
Smalling was on the bench for last weekend’s 2-0 victory so the assumption will be he has picked another injury up in training, further adding to the list of defensive injuries this season.
Whilst Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Tyler Blackett and Patrick McNair can fill the void at the back, the latter two would have been expected to feature anyway, it is another blow for Van Gaal who believes the injury crisis was ending a few weeks ago.
The manager also confirmed Ashley Young is still missing with a hamstring injury he picked up against Stoke City on New Year’s Day so Van Gaal will definitely have some defensive reshuffling to do on Friday.
Evans and Smalling have both missed large chunks of the current season with various injuries and supporters are beginning to get fed up of their first team defenders constantly missing through injury.
The lack of consistency has undoubtedly affected organisation at the back for the club this season but it’s hoped there will still be enough quality to overcome League Two oppostion.
