Blackpool manager excited about signing Joe Rothwell

Blackpool manager Lee Clark has revealed his excitement over the loan signing of Manchester United youngster Joe Rothwell.

The 20-year-old has often been thought to be on the verge of a first team appearance for United given his performances at U21 level and he’ll now have a chance to prove himself at Championship level.

It will also be a test of Rothwell’s resolve and determination given Blackpool sit rock bottom of the division after financial issues took over last summer.

Clark himself had Jesse Lingard on loan whilst he was manager of Birmingham City last season and Lingard shone, scoring four goals on his debut, and Clark is hoping Rothwell can emulate Lingard.

“He has a lot of talent,” said Clark. “He has the Manchester United mentality, the work ethic, the training. They train how they play.

“He is an exciting young player. I’d like to think he can do what young Jesse Lingard did for me at Birmingham.

“I think he can add to us at the top end of the pitch. It’s a young player with a lot to prove in the game, and that can only bode well for us.”

Rothwell is thought to have the potential for a bright future at Old Trafford given his performances at U21 level and they won’t have gone unnoticed by van Gaal who now appears keen for Rothwell to get first team experience.

The midfielder scored a superb brace in a match before Christmas, showing the talent that has him on the verge of a breakthrough at Old Trafford.
