Garcia confirms Strootman ruled out for the season

Roma boss Rudi Garcia confirmed that Kevin Strootman has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

The Dutch midfielder had to undergo more knee surgery after a fresh setback last week and although Strootman insisted it was not a serious problem, that is certainly not the case.

“Losing him, especially after a long injury, is a catastrophe for us,” Garcia said.

“The season is over for Strootman.”

Strootman was widely considered to be one of Louis van Gaal‘s primary targets but having been ruled out for the rest of the season, it would now be a major risk if Man United were to move for him in the summer after effectively spending the last two years sidelined with injury.

After the Owen Hargreaves nightmare, the last thing United want is to sign somebody who ends up spending more time injured than available for selection.

The signing of Radamel Falcao on loan was a more measured approach and minimised the risk for Man United but Roma would more than likely be very unwilling to strike a similar deal, so it would be a massive risk by Van Gaal if he were to still make a move for him in the summer.
