Manchester United supporters were quite looking forward to seeing Ander Herrera on Tuesday night.
Given that he didn’t play at the weekend, it seemed certain the popular Spaniard would be in the starting line-up against Cambridge.
Alas, he wasn’t, and United fans once again sat back and scratched their heads at the continued absence of the midfielder. Herrera hasn’t started a league game since the first week in December yet shows plenty of quality on the field pretty much every time he is given a chance.
Within a minute of coming on, the former Bilbao man assisted the final goal of the evening for James Wilson and showed a willingness to be creative where others hadn’t and fans were united in disbelief surrounding his continued spot on the bench.
Another one, is the Herrera situation a sign of what is to come at United? Top players struggling to get into the side due to top players…

Ander Herrera has been on 30 seconds and played a forward pass that led to a goal. Van Gaal needs to get that shit down on his notepad.

Herrera's continued absence from the starting line up is mystifying.has shown more than Mata and fellaini when he has played #mufc

With the very physical West Ham next on the horizon, Van Gaal could well go with the likes of Rooney and Fellaini in midfield rather than someone like Herrera and fans will wonder where the little Spaniard fits in at Old Trafford.
But the best teams have quality off the bench and that is something United have lacked in recent years, now we’ll have to get used to it.
