De Gea and Van Gaal not on speaking terms

David de Gea and Louis van Gaal have suffered a complete breakdown in their relationship and haven’t spoke to each other in months, if reports from Spain are to be believed.

AS report De Gea is unhappy with van Gaal after the Manchester United manager decided against giving him individual praise for his performances earlier this month.

Instead, van Gaal brushed away discussion about the Spaniard’s performances and insisted that it was a goalkeeper’s job to “hold balls”.

“I think he doesn’t save many points because he’s my goalkeeper – his obligation is to hold balls,” van Gaal said.

“You are thinking that is an exception.

“For other goalkeepers it’s not like that.”

The Dutchman typically does not give individual praise to his players as it is not part of his management style but De Gea has without doubt been Man United’s most important player so far this season.

AS’ story contradicts comments earlier this month from De Gea’s agent, Jorge Mendes, who said he was negotiating a new deal with United amid strong interest from Real Madrid.

Recent reports from the Daily Mail, which also suggest De Gea is in fact closing in on a new contract, have added to the confusion.

According to the story, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed he is happy with Iker Casillas and Keylor Navas as his current goalkeeping options and that a move for De Gea is now not a priority.

Contrasting reports are two a penny when it comes to Man United and transfer rumours so it should come as no surprise to see the same happening in the press when covering De Gea’s future.

However, with De Gea’s current contract expiring in 2016, United fans are becoming increasingly concerned about where his future lies.
