Nathaniel Clyne stalling on contract offer and is keen on Manchester United move – report

Manchester United are plotting a move for Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne and will attempt to sign him as soon as the summer transfer window opens.

Clyne’s contract at Southampton runs out in July 2016 and the Mirror reports that the Englishman has refused to sign a new deal at the club and is keen to follow in the footsteps of Luke Shaw after he joined Man United in a £27m deal last summer.

United were close to signing Clyne when he left Crystal Palace in 2012 but he eventually joined the Saints on a four-year deal.

Louis van Gaal has been impressed by Clyne and, with the future of Rafael far from certain, is hopeful of bringing him to Old Trafford next season.

Rafael has fallen out of favour with van Gaal, who has preferred to use Paddy McNair and Antonio Valencia down United’s right flank in recent games.

As much as fans would like to see a fully fit Rafael playing week-in-week-out for the first-team, the fact of the matter is that his injury history means Rafael simply can’t be relied on any more.

It appears likely the Brazilian will leave and Clyne would be a more than capable replacement should he be brought into the club. Strong, pacey and a threat offensively, he would undoubtedly improve the team.
