Axel Tuanzebe and Marcus Rashford were both rewarded for their good form with Manchester United’s U18s by being named on the bench for last night’s U21s game against Bolton Wanderers in the Manchester Senior Cup.
Warren Joyce named a relatively young squad for the game which United lost 1-0 and it was great to see both Tuanzebe and Rashford getting recognised for their strong form.
Rashford has been in excellent goalscoring form for the U18s having scored a spectacular free-kick a few weeks ago against Tottenham Hotspur before following it up with a match winning brace at the weekend against Derby.
Rashford might have been an unused sub but simply being brought into the U21s is progress enough and with United’s current misfiring strikers, it’s always exciting to see a youngster scoring so naturally in the lower ranks.
As for Tuanzebe, he has been a rock at the back for United’s U18s. Earlier this season, they went on a phenomenal run of clean sheets between November and January which was in part due to Tuanzebe’s form. He even managed to get ten minutes at the end of the game.
The inclusion of both players in the U21s squad by no means indicates they are close to joining up with the first-team but it is progression for them to simply be involved in a matchday with U21s.
There is a real hope that Timothy Fosu-Mensah will be afforded that some opportunity at some stage this year also.
