Louis van Gaal has only shown glimpses of his famous temper during his spell in charge of Manchester United but he snapped when asked about Wayne Rooney’s goal celebration in the 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Rooney scored United’s third goal and celebrated by punching the air before falling backwards as he was surrounded by his teammates.
The celebration was in light of a video released prior to the game of Rooney being knocked to the floor by Phil Bardsley in a play fight.
It was a light-hearted moment during the match but van Gaal failed to see the funny side when asked about the episode.
Speaking about the celebration, van Gaal said: ”In what a world we live that we are talking about such a thing – that a newspaper paid a lot for a video and I am answering questions about that.
“What is this world, twisted? I don’t want to answer questions about such things.”
It was an unfortunate incident for Rooney given that it was a private incident between friends which should never have seen the light of day but United’s captain might have to re-evaluate who he lets round his house if some of his ‘friends’ are all too happy to sell stories to the newspaper.
As for the fallout at United, van Gaal might have got onto Rooney’s case if he under-performed against Spurs but he couldn’t have played much better. If anything, van Gaal might be asking Rooney to get knocked out every week if that’s how he plays after.
