Wesley Sneijder: Robin van Persie is still a world-class player

Wesley Sneijder believes Robin van Persie is still a world-class player despite a downturn in form this season.

Van Persie and Arjen Robben are currently both injured, meaning Sneijder will captain the Dutch national team for the upcoming games against Turkey and Spain.

Under compatriot Louis van Gaal this season, van Persie has struggled and many fans saw his injury as a blessing in disguise as it meant Wayne Rooney could move back up front.

Sneijder claims the Netherlands will feel the loss of van Persie and Robben but that they can cope without the duo.

Speaking about the pair, Sneijder said: “We can also get a good result without Arjen and Robin. Although you don’t need a degree in maths to know that their absence is a bit of a blow.

“Arjen and Robin show week after week that they are among the best players in the world at Bayern Munich and Manchester United, respectively.

Van Persie’s form may have concerned fans prior to this season but van Gaal’s management style has given the sense that any player can turn things around.

Players such as Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini, who previously looked lost at Old Trafford, have transformed themselves under the 63-year-old. If there is anyone who can help van Persie it is van Gaal as the pair worked together with the Netherlands for a number of years prior to his arrival at United last summer.
