Real Madrid are considering a move for Bayer Leverkusen keeper Bernd Leno as an alternative to Manchester United’s David de Gea.
Reports from Bild and Marca suggest Madrid have been scouting the 23-year-old for a number of months.
Leno is considered one of the brightest young talents in Europe having made his Champions League debut against Chelsea aged just 19.
The German’s €18m release clause means he would cost significantly less than the sum Madrid would need to take De Gea from Old Trafford.
United fans would be delighted if there was truth in this rumour given De Gea’s sensational form this term.
More so than signing any new players, keeping De Gea at United has to be seen as the main priority for Ed Woodward this summer.
However, it is unlikely that Madrid would give up on the Spaniard so easily having chased him for so long.
Perhaps Madrid are making it clear to their fans that they are not putting all their eggs in one basket and they are not desperate for De Gea. The hope for United fans is that the 24-year-old will sign a new contract at United if the club qualifies for the Champions League.
