Tim Sherwood keen on permanent deal for Tom Cleverley

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood is hopeful of signing Manchester United loanee Tom Cleverley on a permanent basis in the summer.

Cleverley arrived at Villa Park last summer and initially failed to make an impression under Paul Lambert but he has flourished since Sherwood took over.

As well as Villa, the likes of Arsenal, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are all said to be interested in his services.

Sherwood admitted he is keen on signing Cleverley but insisted they will only discuss his future once his side secure their Premier League status for next season.

Speaking about Cleverley, Sherwood said: ”We’re certainly interested in talking to Tom when the time is right.

“Tom, his representatives and Aston Villa are willing to put this on the back burner. They know how important it is to stay in the Premier League because, after all, Tom wouldn’t want to join a club in the Championship.

“[But] I think there’s a good chance we will try and do a deal and see if it is right for both parties.

“I’ve been pleased with Tom, I like him. I like what he adds to the side. He has a lot of energy [and] he links the ball very well. I think he can add goals to his game but he is certainly one of the names I put on the teamsheet straight away.”

Cleverley became the butt of jokes at Man United towards the end of his career at Old Trafford but Sherwood thinks differently and is keen to do a deal with Louis van Gaal.

Although not good enough for United, he could do a job for a mid-table club. It is unlikely that United will miss him too much, with players such as Ander Herrera and Michael Carrick currently in the form of their lives.
