Van Gaal did spend £150m on six new signings last year but it is widely expected he will be just as active in the upcoming transfer window as he is looking to make Man United’s squad competitive enough to challenge for the Premier League as well as the Champions League.
All four have been linked with moves to Old Trafford over the course of at least the last 12 months, some more than others,
Bale has been booed by Real Madrid’s supporters on more than one occasion this year and The Telegraph’s Mark Ogden last night reported that van Gaal was preparing a £100m bid if he felt the Welsh winger wanted to leave.
Depay is going to leave PSV this summer and Man United are considered favourites to sign him because of the influence Louis van Gaal has and his previous relationship with the Dutch winger having coached him at the World Cup.
Hummels is next on the Telegraph’s list. The Borussia Dortmund captain has been linked with Man United for a number of years but following now that Jurgen Klopp is leaving and Ilkay Gundogan is not signing a contract extension, cracks are starting to appear at Dortmund after a dismal season. With that in mind, Hummels could follow suit and leave too.
The Belfast Telegraph certainly think he’ll join and believe Jonny Evans will make way for Hummels at the club.
Last but not least is Nathaniel Clyne. He is considered to be one of the best right-backs in the Premier League which has been one of United’s troublesome positions this year, hence why Clyne links have gathered so much pace.
The latest on Clyne is that Ronald Koeman has set him a ten day deadline in which he must inform the club if he is willing to accept their latest, and final, contract offer.
All in all, those are four great players who’d undoubtedly improve United’s starting XI but there is a gaping omission in the list as there is no mention of a central midfielder, a position which van Gaal has already made clear he wants to strengthen.
With only a few weeks left in the Premier League season, it’s not long before the transfer window really kicks into gear and we’ll be keeping on top of all the action for you here at The Peoples Person.
